Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi has said that his state visit indicates the importance India attaches to strong ties with the Maldives.

Modi's statement came in a tweet sent on Saturday, following his arrival to the Maldives. In his tweet, Modi further highlighted that India desires to boost cooperation in various spheres with the Maldives.

"Reached the Republic of Maldives. This visit indicates the importance India attaches to strong ties with the Republic of Maldives and the desire to boost cooperation in various spheres," Modi said in his tweet.

Official talks between the two countries have now begun, and is expected to end with the signing of 6 MoUs. Later, Modi will also address the Maldivian parliament.

The official welcoming ceremony for the visiting Prime Minister of India, His Excellency Narendra Modi to the Maldives was held this evening at the Republic Square.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will also present the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, with the Order of the rule of Izzudeen following the talks.
