The Human Rights Committee of the parliament has started investigating the riots at the Maafushi Prison yesterday.
The announcement was made in a tweet from the official account of the Maldivian parliament.
The tweet said that the committee would begin looking into the cause of the riots at the meeting scheduled for 11 a.m. tomorrow.
While accusations of torturing inmates at Maafushi Prison hit social media, Maldives Correctional Service has denied the allegations. However, the Correctional Service said that an officer was brought to Male’ for treatment after he was attacked by an inmate.
Home Ministry later said that an investigation is underway after the correctional Service had used excessive force to control the riot.
