Commissioner General of Prisons, Abdulla Munaz has said that it was requested to the Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office and the Supreme Court to fast track the cases of those in the remand jail.

At a joint parliament committee meeting with the national security committee and human rights and gender committee regarding the riot at Maafushi Prison on Thursday, the Commissioner of Prisons said that the request was made to the PG Office in January and then to the Supreme Court in February.

Prisons Commissioner Munaz said that the people in remand jail has been there so long that their mentality is down, angry and want to attack the prison officers and noted that the Thursday riot was at a remand cell.

He said that the Unit 4 where the riot took place is where people are imprisoned on remand without a sentence and incidents as such takes place when people are indefinitely jailed on remand.

Commissioner Munaz said that the people on remand are not criminals and thus the treatment they receive is different.
