Minister Abdulla Rafiu has said the government is working to secure grants, rather than loans, to fund the construction of a new national football stadium.

Speaking at a recent press conference, Rafiu noted that building a stadium would require significant funding, and taking on a loan would place a heavy financial burden on the country. Instead, discussions are ongoing with countries such as China and Saudi Arabia to support the project through grants.

The existing Galolhu National Stadium has been largely unusable since parts were deemed unsafe in 2019, although it was temporarily used during the SAFF Championship 2021.

Rafiu added that surveys for the new stadium are expected to begin this year, with construction to follow once official arrangements are finalized. Meanwhile, demolition work at the old stadium site has been assigned to Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO).
