President Ibrhaim Mohamed Solih has said that from the 9200 flats being constructed by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation, the government is set to rent two-room apartments for MVR 6000 and three-room apartments for MVR 7000 per month.

The President made the statement at an ongoing press conference.

President Solih revealed that, so far the construction of 5,000 housing units in the atolls have been put on bid and that works were progressing. He added that field work of the projects will begin sometime this year.

A framework agreement is also to be signed with two parties for the development of 4,200 housing units in Hulhumale.

Under this project, two room apartments of 7600 sqft will be rented for MVR 6,000 whole 9,000 sqft three room apartments will go for MVR 7,000.

He added that two room apartments that were developed by President Abdulla Yameen would have gone for MVR 11,000 which was not affordable for the common man through a social housing scheme. However, since the apartments were a mere 520 square ft, they were changed since it was not suitable to be inhabited by humans. With the changes, a three room apartment costs up to MVR 23,000 while a two room apartments costs MVR 13,000.

President Solih noted that the government was working on making sure the rent stays near MVR 6,000.
