Health Minister Geela Ali has announced that the Maldives' new Cancer Hospital will begin providing services before 2028.

Responding to a question in Parliament on Tuesday, Geela said the hospital, which is being developed in phases in Hulhumalé Phase II, will be a 25-bed multi-speciality facility offering cancer, maternal and child healthcare services.

The hospital will provide essential diagnostic tests, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and PET scan services.

The minister said 120 new cancer patients, comprising 67 women and 53 men, were registered in 2025. She also noted that 5,755 people have received cancer-related treatment abroad through Aasandha at a cost of MVR 374 million.

Geela said cancer care services are currently available at Hulhumalé Hospital and Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), while services are also being expanded to hospitals in Addu City and Haa Dhaalu, Laamu, Raa and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls.

She further noted that mammogram services for early breast cancer detection are currently available at five regional hospitals, as well as in Fuvahmulah City and Baa Atoll Hospital. Through Aasandha, arrangements have also been made for patients to receive treatment at 15 hospitals in India and two hospitals in Sri Lanka.
