President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that Maldivians do not want changes to the country's system of government that could weaken national unity and cohesion.

Speaking on PSM's Nation Chat programme, President Dr Muizzu said Maldivians had already made a clear and decisive choice in favour of a unitary presidential system. He noted that the Maldives is a small island nation whose people share a common language, heritage and values, and said the governance system should preserve those characteristics.

The President also argued that parliamentary systems can lead to frequent changes in leadership and political instability. He alleged that efforts by opposition groups to change the system were largely driven by aspirations for positions of power.

President Dr Muizzu reiterated that the presidential system, under which the Head of State and Government is directly elected by the people, remains the model best suited to the Maldives.
