Bank of Maldives (BML) CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef has been appointed Chairman of the Asian Bankers Association (ABA), becoming the first Maldivian to hold the position.

His appointment took effect on 31 July 2026 following approval by the ABA Board in accordance with the Association’s Charter.

Shareef previously served as ABA Vice Chairman from 2018 to 2020 and was reappointed to the role in 2025. During his tenure, he helped strengthen cooperation among member banks and advance the Association’s strategic priorities.

Commenting on his appointment, Shareef said he was honoured by the confidence placed in him by the ABA Board and member institutions and looked forward to strengthening regional collaboration and supporting the growth of Asia’s banking sector.

Established in 1981, the Asian Bankers Association represents banks and banking associations across Asia, promoting policy dialogue, professional development and the exchange of industry best practices.

Shareef’s appointment marks a significant milestone for the Maldives’ representation in regional financial leadership. Bank of Maldives will also host the 42nd ABA General Meeting and Conference in the Maldives from 1 to 3 September 2026.
