Prosecutor General, Aishath Bisham has raised concerns stating that a number of major cases of murder, human trafficking, child sexual abuse and drug trafficking are being delayed in the judicial system.

Talking at the parliament’s judicial committee today, Bisham said that cases pending in the system include case against Aafiya Mohamed Manik in connection to brutal homicide of her son, Mohamed Ibthihaal who was found dead in Vaavu Atoll Rakeedhoo and the case against Ibrahim Shaah (Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo) in connection to the death of Ziyadha Naeem who died at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) while in treatment after she was brutally raped.

After the four charges against Shaah was dismissed by the Criminal Court, the case was appealed at the High Court on 4 April 2019. Bisham said that there hasn’t been a hearing since the appeal was filed.

PG Bisham said that the Ibthihaal case has been pending for three years and the last hearing in the case was on 8 August 2018.
