MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed has issued an indirect warning to MDP parliament members, asking them not to speak against the party's official policy following the submission of a resolution to Parliament calling for the disclosure of the government's agreement with UAE's Eagle Hills company.

In a message sent to the MDP National Council's WhatsApp group, President Nasheed issued this warning after opposition MDP Galolhu South constituency member Meekail Ahmed Naseem submitted a resolution to Parliament today. The resolution calls for disclosing all details of the agreement regarding the Rasmalé project and ascertaining the stance of members of parliament on the matter.

In connection with this resolution, President Nasheed, in an indirect caution to members, cited the past incident where former member Ali Azim was dismissed from the party for violating party policy as an example.

President Nasheed noted that Ali Azim was dismissed from the party for speaking against party policy while serving as a member of parliament. He also brought to the members' attention that the party has already issued an official statement regarding Eagle Hills.

The party's disciplinary committee decided to expel former Central Henveiru constituency member Ali Azim from MDP membership in May 2023, during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Azim's expulsion was decided over his cooperation with then-opposition parties against the ITLOS ruling on the maritime boundary dispute between the Maldives and Mauritius.

The MDP press statement pointed out by President Nasheed was issued on the 15th of this month, calling for the disclosure of details of the government's agreement and for a public referendum regarding the implementation of the project.

MDP leadership holds differing views regarding the massive project being carried out by Eagle Hills in Rasmalé. While President Nasheed has not entirely opposed the project, former President Solih is against it.

Regarding the Eagle Hills agreement, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assured yesterday while speaking on the President's Office podcast "The False" that the agreement would be shared with relevant parliamentary committees.
