Maldives has been selected to host the 11th Indian Ocean Island Games in 2023.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih made the announcement via Twitter, and stated what a great pride it was for the nation to have been selected to do so.

"It is with great pride I announce that Maldives has been officially selected to host the 11th Indian Ocean Island Games in 2023. Maldives has participated in all 10 editions of the IOIG. So it’s fitting that we return the hospitality extended to us by our fellow island nations," President Solih said on Twitter.

The Indian Ocean Island Games is a multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from Indian Ocean island nations.

The Games was created by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1977 and currently gather the island nations and territories of Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Madagascar, Mayotte, Réunion and the Maldives.

IOIG is amongst the biggest sporting events in the region.

While Maldives remain as a founding member of the IOIG, the 2023 games in the Maldives would become the biggest sports tournament to be held in the Maldives.

Maldives had achieved three gold medals at the IOIG this year, with a total of 13 medals.
