A police officer has been arrested under the suspicion of molesting two children.

Maldives Police Service said that the arrest was made today and court has remanded the man by 15 days.

A case of sexual child abuse was filed against the officer in question in March 2019. A similar case against him was filed against him in October 2018.

While no further details on the identity of the man was offered by the police, a number of media outlets speculated that the man in question is a male police sergeant when the police initially announced that an investigation is underway.

The man was on a no-pay leave abroad when the investigation began and he was arrested when he returned to the country.

The case is being investigated by the Professional Standards Command and the Family and Child Protection Department of the police.
