State Prosecution has requested the Supreme Court that the former Vice President, Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor, be detained until the end of his trial.

The request was made at the hearing today in the case of the embezzlement of US 5 million (MVR 77 million) by Adeeb that should go to the state as acquisition fee from Kurehdhoo Holdings for leasing Lhaviyani Atoll Maabinhura to them.

The case initially resulted in an eight-year prison sentence on Adeeb from the Criminal Court in 2016. However, when the case was appealed at the High Court, Criminal Court was ordered to do a re-trial. The state appealed the case at the Supreme Court after the Criminal Court failed to do a re-trial as per the High Court ruling.

So far the Court has only granted the state request to hold the former Vice President’s passport and the Supreme Court said that they did not issue the order to detain him as he is already carrying out a sentence.

However, Adeeb attempted to flee by going to India on a Tugboat for which the Criminal Court ruled 15 days of detention.

Although the state has Adeeb in custody, the Supreme Court did not make a decision on it today.
