Parliament has put on the agenda for tomorrow on deciding to appoint Aisha Shujune and Dr. Azmiralda Zahir to the Supreme Court.

A debate on the report by the Judicial Committee regarding the appointment of the two to the Supreme Court will be first carried out, followed by a vote.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih submitted the two names to be appointed to the Supreme Court bench on August 26. If appointed, Azmiralda and Shujune will make history as the first female judges to be appointed to the Top Court.

Their names were sent to the Parliament after the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) consulted President Solih to appoint the two to the Supreme Court bench.

The President can only appoint a judge to a court after consulting with the JSC and securing a majority vote through the Parliament.

While President Solih nominated two female judges to the top court, difference of opinion on the topic is being observed between religious scholars.
