Former Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that the people at the root of corruption, the former Vice President, Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor and Abdulla Ziyath have been transferred to house arrest and so requests the former President, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to be transferred to house arrest as well.

Taking to Twitter after meeting with former President Yameen at his jail cell today, Dr. Jameel said that he requests the Home Minister, Imran Abdulla to transfer the former President to house arrest as well.

He said that he discussed the appeal of the Criminal Court sentence with President Yameen today. He said that the Criminal Court passed a bad sentence on the former President.

Former President Yameen was convicted of money laundering and sentenced on Wednesday to five years in prison with a five million dollar fine.

Adeeb and Ziyath testified against the former President during the trial; both were sentenced in connection with the MMPRC corruption scandal.

Ziyath is currently on an eight-year prison sentence. However, he was transferred to house arrest in February 2019.

Adeeb, meanwhile has been charge with multiple counts of corruption before he was released for a re-trial and was banned from leaving the country. But after a failed attempt to flee to Indian, he was sentenced to three months in prison.

While he still has seven counts of corruption against him in relation to the MMPRC corruption scandal, he too was transferred to house arrest.
