Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has nullified the candidacy of Madheeha Abdulla, who is competing in the MDP primaries for a ticket to contest for Gaafu Alif Kanduhulhudhoo Council.

Her candidacy was nullified at a time when she had stood in defense of the rapist of a 2 year old child in Kanduhulhudhoo.

Madheeha had alleged that the maternal family of the child had spread rumours of her paternal grandfather raping the child and escalated the situation regarding it. She had then alleged that the child would not walk around happily if she had been subjected to rape from three men and had denied all accusations of rape levied against the great grandfather, grandfather and the father of the child.

She faced severe backlash for her comments, after which several members of MDP called onto nullify her candidacy. Many had called to boycott the primaries if she was competing.

MDP had then decided to nullify her candidacy, and decided to take action against their party members who support such ideologies.
