As the current term of the Island, Atoll and City Councilors end, a new constitutional amendment has been passed by the parliament to extend their term.
The current term of the councilors expires at 12 a.m. tonight and the amendment was proposed by the government was passed by the 74 MPs at the parliament sitting held last night. After the vote, the Speaker of the Parliament, former President Mohamed Nasheed said that the bill will be sent to the President today for ratification.
The term of the councilors was extended with by amending two sub-sections of Article 231 of the constitution, so that the current councilors would have their term extended.
It was highlighted at the parliament sitting to assure that the Loca Government Act and stated the mandate of the councilors during the extension.
