The rape of a foreign woman that took place on a safari yacht at the Hulhumale’ lagoon has been put on the agenda tomorrow for the Parliament Committee for Human Rights.

MP Rozaina Adam who is also a member of the committee noted that the case now been put on the agenda for the meeting scheduled at 2:00pm tomorrow.

She also added that even though Committee Head, MP Jeehan Mahmood was the one to put the case on the agenda, Deputy Head, MP Hussain Ziyad will oversee the meeting. The decision comes at a time when speculations have been rife about one of the two men who were initially arrested regarding the rape case is the husband of MP Jeehan.

Maldives Police Service arrested two 39-year-old local men with a connection to the rape of a woman on a safari yacht in the early hours of Friday morning. The two were taken into custody from the scene of the crime but were later released due to insufficient evidence.

This was followed by the criticism of the public towards the police and the government with some people alleging that the suspects were released through political influence.

Maldives Police Service has said that the case is being investigated even though the suspects were released.
