Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) President Aiminath Enas along with HRCM member Aishath Afreen Mohamed have resigned today.
Their resignation comes during a time when the Parliament Committee on Human Rights and Gender had decided to dismiss the commission members and begun works on doing so.
As such a committee meeting was scheduled for 4:00pm today, where the members would be given the opportunity to defend themselves regarding the issues that the committee had found while working on their dismissal.
Committee Head, MP Jeehan Mahmood first submitted a letter on May 18 to Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, stating that the HRCM members had failed to fulfil their responsibilities in upholding the rights of people during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The issue was sent to the committee after it was announced on the parliament floor.
The investigative report by the committee stated that the commission had failed to do adequate work to ensure the rights of the people during a pandemic like COVID-19.
HRCM members include President Aminath Enas, Vice President Mohamed Zahid, Member Moosa Ali Kaleyfaan, Member Naiveen Abdulla and Member Aishath Afreen Mohamed.
