Yasir Yahya, a Yemeni man married to a Maldivian woman who was detained since 2017, has passed away while seeking treatment at state-run Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Maldives Correctional Services had confirmed the news to "One". They revealed that Yasir passed away today around 4:25pm today and added that his condition deteriorated following a hunger strike.
They also noted that the news of his death has since been shared with the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), Inspector of the Correctional Service as well as his family.
Yasir, who was working as a teacher was arrested under a court order in 2017, claiming that he will be deported. No charges had been filed against him, and his wife revealed that there were no pending investigations.
He had staged a hunger strike after being arrested, and was previously admitted as well due to the strike.
