Chief Magistrate of the Gaafu Alifu Maamendhoo Magistrate Court, Ahmed Shukoor has resigned from his position.
He has resigned after the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) filed a disciplinary case against him to the parliament on Sunday. And yesterday, the Parliament’s Judiciary Committee passed to dismiss Magistrate Shukoor from his position.
A statement issued by the JSC today said that with Shukoor’s resignation today, he has left the position of Magistrate effective from today as per Article 30-A of the Judiciary Act.
JSC decided to file a dismissal case against Magistrate Shukoor after an investigation to for cases with his involvement.
During his tenure as a Magistrate at Vilingili, Shukoor accepted an envelope at a restaurant on the island from a person who was arrested in a case he was presiding over, according to the JSC.
The JSC has further said that in Shukoor acted unfairly by sharing his decision with the police outside the court in a case of a group of people arrested on a terrorism charge in G.A. Kolamaafushi and acted unjustly in the courtroom as well.
