It will become mandatory to wear a helmet on the Sinamale' Bridge highway after the 10 March 2019.

Speaking at a press conference held by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation today, Minister Aishath Nahula noted that the people need to consider that amount of accidents upon the Sinamale' Bridge highway are going up.

The Minister announced that as such, wearing helmets on the Sinamale' Bridge will be made mandatory from 10 March 2019.

Nahula said that mandatory helmets are being implemented as a safety measure. She noted that majority of the accidents on the Sinamale' Bridge were life-threatening cases due to head injuries. The Minister noted the rise in accidents on the bridge highway and said that the safety of lives on the Sinamale' Bridge should not require strict regulations, as it is every Maldivian's civic duty to adhere to safety measures.

While the Ministry will begin implementing the helmet-rule on the 10th of March 2019, Nahula announced that action will be taken against those who fail to adhere to this regulation. She further said that Maldives Police will be closely monitoring drivers and that those without helmets will be prevented from getting on the bridge.

While a higher speed is allowed on the Ring road and bridge, the Minister noted that several people do not adhere to the maximum speed limits assigned.
