Former President Nasheed said that members should not run for Parliament with the intent acquiring wealth. He further said that Parliamentary members should not be involved in owning and operating businesses.

President Nashed spoke at a campaign event of Parliamentary hopeful Mohamed Visaam. Nasheed said that the allowance allocated for members of Parliament is sufficiently large.

He urged that the 19th Parliamentary body of Maldives is not built on buying and selling votes. He further reassured that he will not allow such actions to take place.

Nasheed said that members elected to the 19th People's Majlis should have the people's true confidence and credibility. He urged people to elect MPs who do not own or operate businesses. He said the people should not elect such an MP who gets elected to Majlis one day, and opens up a resort or guesthouse the very next day.

Nasheed stressed that the new Parliamentary body should be made up of integrity and that it should bring the people's hopes to fruition.

He noted that the most integral purpose of electing Parliamentary officials is to work for the people. He said that the intent cannot be to acquire massive amounts of wealth as an MP.

President Nasheed advised that, should members not be able to make ends meet with the allowance provided by a Parliamentary position, they could always seek employment. On that note, Nasheed said however that the job should not be owning and operating a business.
