The Prosecutor General’s office has announced that they will not be moving forward with the case against MP for Dhiggaru constituency Ahmed Faris Maumoon. A case had been submitted against Faris at the Criminal Court alleging that he had given out bribes.
PG office also reported that the decision has been taken to not move forward with the case and said that the case has been handed over to Maldives Police Service.
The case against Faris was submitted due to allegations that he had pressured and carried out illegal activity against members of Parliament with the intent of acquiring 42 no confidence vote signatures against the Speaker of Parliament. The amendment stating that there has to be at least 42 votes in a proposal to enact a no confidence vote was passed through Parliament on 10 April 2017.
Farus had spearheaded the move to take a vote of no confidence on then Speaker of Parliament, Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed.
