Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to enact submission of financial statements of family members of Parliamentary members. This submission is in addition to the declaration of income and assets by members of Parliament.

The concluding event of MDP’s Parliamentary Campaign Policy Workshop held at Hulhumale’ Brightwave International School called for a more a Maldivian Parliament of more integrity and accountability. As such, MDP maintained that ensuring the Parliament's integrity involved reform to the current laws governing Parliament and so submitting financial statements of MP’s and family members.

Parliamentary hopeful for the Felidhoo constituency, Mabrouq Azeez proposed the change and said that while MPs of Maldives are required to submit financial statements, the matter needs to be reformed. Mabrouk said that the law needs to be amended to require MPs and family members of MPs to declare assets, source of income and ownership of goods such as expensive jewelry.

He proposed the amendment that dictates that a profile including financial statements and works of MPs and all other information need to be published in the website of Parliament. The information on the website would include detailed information on attendance, speeches or debates and votes on Parliamentary Bills of MPs according to Mabrouq.

Mabrouq’s proposal declared the significance of MPs meeting with their constituents and stated that every MP should meet with constituents at least once a month. The proposal highlighted that administrative staff and a specific office need to be assigned to MPs to schedule such meetings with constituents.

Former President Nasheed spoke at the event, attended by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and said that amendments to these proposals can be submitted until next Tuesday.
