Former Vice President, Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor, has been transferred back to prison following an order from the Supreme Court.
Adeeb was taken by Maldives Correctional Services moments ago after being released into house arrest initially by the order of the High Court. It has not yet been 24 hours since Adeeb’s transfer back home, when a Supreme Court order has the former VP transferred back to prison.
The Maldives High Court had ordered Adeeb’s transfer back to house arrest following an appeal that was submitted at the court earlier. The appeal had claimed that Adeeb’s health was suffering and that his condition could possibly endanger his life.
An appeal to overturn the house arrest ruling by High Court was submitted by the State to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had then announced that a ruling on the case requires further time for deliberation. As a Supreme Court decision is still pending, the court gave a temporary order today to delay the implementation of the order for house arrest by the High Court. The Supreme Court has ordered authorities and said that no action should be taken to implement the High Court ruling until a conclusion is reached by the Supreme Court.
Adeeb had been transferred under house arrest upon the order of the High Court sometimes last night.
