Former Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) Abdulla Ziyath has been transferred under house arrest. Ziyath is currently serving a prison sentence on charges of embezzlement.

Some media have reported that the house arrest has been arranged by Minister of Home Affairs Sheikh Imran Abdulla and the authorities granted to him with the position. Maldives Correctional Services have however not commented on the matter.

A sentence was passed on Ziyath when proven guilty on charges of embezzling USD 5 million paid for the acquisition cost of Lhaviyani Maabin Huraa to MMPRC. Various other charges had also been raised against Ziyath concerning corruption at MMPRC.

Former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor has also been sentences to prison on charges of corruption concerning MMPRC. Adeeb had been transferred back to prison after house arrest following court orders.
