Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that former President Abdulla Yameen should be given the opportunity to provide a defence for charges of corruption.
President Nasheed said that the case of corruption against President Yameen should be investigated and said that it will be granted due judicial proceedings.
He said that the proceedings should be transparent and fair. President Nasheed said that it is constitutional that, President Yameen is given a fair amount of time to prepare a defense. He said that a fair trial should be concluded and the criminal parties justly punished.
The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) had reportedly embezzled MVR 1.4 billion during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
President Yameen has since been summoned to Police for questioning regarding the investigation.
While a major protest is calling for the reveal of all beneficiaries of corruption at MMPRC before the Parliamentary elections, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) have started discussions on releasing more information regarding the case.
