A motion to summon the Governor of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), Ahmed Naseer to the Parliamentary Committee of Independent Institutions has been submitted.
The Governor is being summoned before the Parliamentary Committee concerning the case of the sudden dismissal of former Head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Abdulla Ashraf.
The motion to present the Governor before the Parliamentary Committee of Independent Institutions was submitted by the MP for Galohu-North constituency, Eva Abdulla.
The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), at MMA was created under the Prevention of Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism Act. The previous Head of the FIU prior to Ashraf was Athif Shakoor. The Governor of MMA is responsible for the appointment of these titles.
In a letter submitted to the Parliamentary Committee of Independent Institutions, MP Eva has said that the dismissal of former Head of FIU took place under specific circumstances. As such, MP Eva said that the case of former President Abdulla Yameen transferring USD 1 million from a BML account to an escrow account at ACC had been submitted by FIU to the Commission at the time of dismissal.
The letter by MP Eva also claimed that there had been a case concerning expenditure during the presidential campaign of former President Yameen last year. As such, the letter claimed that the case had been submitted to Maldives Police Service by the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), at MMA at the time of dismissal of department Head, Abdulla Ashraf.
