While a vote of no confidence against the Prosecutor General (PG) Aishath Bisam had been proposed at Parliament, the vote has now been retracted.
Director of Media and Communications at Parliament, Hassan Ziyau has confirmed the news today.
Ziyau said that the vote of no confidence against PG had been proposed to the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions and that the same member that had proposed the move has retracted it. The Director of Media and Communications at Parliament said that the MP had not revealed as to the reason behind the retraction.
The MP that had proposed the vote of no confidence against PG Bisam is, MP for Thinadhoo constituency and member of Jumhooree Party (JP), Abdulla Ahmed.
This is the second instance where the MP for Thinadhoo constituency Abdulla Ahmed had submitted and retracted a vote of no confidence against PG Bisam.
The vote of no confidence proposed by MP Abdulla stated that the PG had not been able to fully complete the responsibilities and duties dictated by the Constitution.
Another reason stated by MP Abdulla claims that the Prosecutor General had failed to confirm sufficient evidence for the arrest of MP’s in the previous administration.
While the vote of no confidence has been retracted by MP Abdulla of JP today, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has proposed to present PG Bisam before the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions.
The MP for Vilufushi constituency, Riyaz Rasheed has been appointed the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions.
This replacement in Chairperson for the Parliamentary Committee took place after a motion had been submitted at Parliament to take a vote of no confidence against the current Chairperson- the MP for Addu-Meedhoo constituency, Rozaina Adam. While MP Rozaina is a member of Maldivian Democratic Party, she has now faced removal from the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions by the party.
