The decision made by the previous administration to build an airport at Raa Atoll Fainu has been overturned.
Talking to One Online today, the State Minister at the Transport Ministry, Mohamed Zuhair said that the decision was overturned not by the government of President Solih, but the government of the former President, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
He said that the current administration is going to make a national development plan with the combined efforts of all the state ministries before deciding the islands to build airports.
And after the plan has been made, the government is going to make a formal announcement and so all the projects planned by the former administrations would be coming to a hold including the airport project at Fainu, according to State Minister, Zuhair.
The Fainu airport project was estimated at USD 8 million and set to have a runway that would be 1,320 meters long and 30 meters wide with an apron of 45 meters. The project would take 20.8 hectare of land from the island.
And so a petition was filed against the project at Fainu which has a total 59 hectares of land.
