Deputy Speaker of People's Majlis, MP for Hulhuhenveyru Constituency, Reeko Moosa Manik, has said that it is very important that the Maldives has a strong opposition party at this stage and if the opportunity rises to work efficiently, there is no reason not to join the PPM Leadership.

Responding to questions from One Online regarding his comments during the recent Parliament Election, Moosa said that an opposition to keep the government accountable is important in a democracy where the powers are separated and at the current state of the country, the opposition voice has gone.

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament said that PPM has to undergo some changes quickly to become the opposition party with the highest MPs in the parliament. And so the party leadership, including the former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, has to step aside according to Reeko Moosa, and give way to a new leadership.

Moosa said that he held down MDP when they lost the Presidency in 2013 and the parliament in 2014 and his political life is still young.

He said that the next person taking charge should not be the party’s candidate in the Presidential Election in 2024. Moosa said that the party needs a strong opposition leader right now. And when the election rolls around, the party must open the door for candidates to apply.

A large number of people have said that Former President of the country and President of PPM, Abdulla Yameen and the current party leadership has to step aside to give way to a new PPM leadership. Some of the party’s MPs have called for it as well.
