Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH) has introduced Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), becoming the first facility outside Malé to offer the life-saving treatment for heart attack patients.

The service was launched in collaboration with the National Cardiac Centre following a specialised medical mission held from 31 March to 2 April 2026.

CEO of the Malé City Group of Hospitals, Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, described the rollout as a major milestone in expanding access to advanced cardiac care across the Maldives.

During the initial mission, medical teams performed 11 angiograms and six angioplasty procedures. The programme also introduced additional services in Addu City, including Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) implants and permanent pacemaker insertions, broadening cardiac treatment options in the region.

The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to decentralise specialised healthcare, aiming to reduce the need for patients to travel to Malé or abroad for critical heart treatment.
