Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed stated today that the introduction of PayPal to the Maldives will significantly expand Maldivians' participation and role in the global digital economy.

Following a long-anticipated wait, PayPal services were officially launched today in partnership with Ooredoo Maldives, with the inaugural ceremony spearheaded by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Speaking at the landmark event, Minister Saeed described the launch as the beginning of a new chapter for the nation. "Today marks the end of a long wait; the world is now at our fingertips," Saeed remarked, highlighting the successful conclusion of a decade-long pursuit to secure the global payment platform.

The Minister emphasized that this development unlocks immense opportunities for local freelancers and content creators who can now seamlessly monetize their talents internationally. He also detailed the extensive groundwork laid by the state, noting that the government had worked tirelessly behind the scenes by presenting direct proposals to PayPal and navigating rigorous testing phases to bring the service to fruition.

Minister Saeed concluded by stating that PayPal’s integration will effectively level the playing field, paving the way for Maldivian businesses and entrepreneurs to freely compete within the international marketplace.
