Parliament is fulfilling its responsibility by introducing constructive amendments to government-proposed legislation to facilitate governance, Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has said.

Addressing MPs at the end of today’s sitting, the Speaker said parliamentarians must uphold equality and support efforts to establish justice, stressing that national stability depends on the level of justice in society.

He said Parliament’s role includes amending, reforming and repealing laws to address differences across various sectors and respond to changing circumstances.

The Speaker noted that the Constitution empowers Parliament to amend existing laws, repeal legislation and enact new laws, making legal reform an essential part of its mandate.

He added that Parliament is carrying out this responsibility by ensuring laws can be updated in line with the needs of the time.
