The current Managing Director of the Maldives Hajj Corporation, Mohamed Shakeel, has been nominated to fill the vacant seat on the Elections Commission (EC).
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu forwarded the nomination to the People’s Majlis for parliamentary approval today. The President's letter was read during the session by Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, and the matter has since been sent to the Committee on Independent Institutions for further evaluation. The names of all other qualified applicants for the post were also sent to the parliament alongside Shakeel's.
Shakeel has a prior history with the electoral body, having previously served as an EC member from December 2014 to May 2018. Before that role, he served as the Director General at the commission from September 2013 to December 2014.
The vacancy on the commission was created following the resignation of its former President, Mohamed Zahid, who stepped down from both the presidency and his membership.
The Elections Commission is comprised of five members. Currently, the commission consists of Vice President Abdul Rahman Salah Rasheed, Hassan Zakariyya, Abdul Haseeb Ismail, and Riffath Abdulla, with the top position of EC President remaining vacant.
