Abdulla Sodiq (Sobe), a member of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) who won the recent by-election for the Hithadhoo North constituency, has taken his oath of office as a Member of Parliament and attended today's parliamentary session.
The oath was administered by Supreme Court Judge Hussain Shaheed during a special ceremony held at the People's Majlis secretariat today.
Sodiq secured the Hithadhoo North seat in the by-election held on the 6th of this month. The parliamentary seat had become vacant following a Supreme Court ruling that disqualified the constituency's previous representative, Ahmed Sinan of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC), due to a proven debt case.
In the by-election, Sodiq won the seat by a tight margin of 62 votes against the ruling PNC candidate, Ahmed Saeed (Soda). Sodiq secured 1,375 votes, while Saeed received 1,313 votes.
