The Parliament’s Government Oversight Committee has approved the appointment of Hassan Zareer as the Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises.
The evaluation process was initiated after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu forwarded the nomination to the People's Majlis following the resignation of the former Finance Minister, Moosa Zameer, on the 8th of this month. Zareer was appointed to the cabinet position on the same day, and his nomination was sent to the oversight committee on June 15.
During its meeting today, the committee stated that relevant background clearances and information were gathered from the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA), the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the Maldives Correctional Service, and the President's Office. Based on the findings, the committee confirmed that Zareer fulfills all constitutional criteria required to hold a cabinet post and is not engaged in any activities prohibited for a minister under the constitution.
The motion to endorse Zareer was proposed by PNC Member for Fuvahmulah Central constituency Ali Fazad and seconded by PNC Member for Vilufushi constituency Hassan Waheed, before being passed by the committee. The final endorsement vote will take place on the parliament floor once the committee's report is officially presented and debated by the full house.
Prior to his ministerial appointment, Zareer served as the Commissioner General of Taxation, a post he resigned from to join the cabinet. In addition to his role as Finance Minister, Zareer has also been appointed as the President of the Local Government Authority (LGA).
