The People’s Majlis has officially approved the appointment of Hassan Zareer as the Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises.
Following the resignation of the former Finance Minister, Moosa Zameer, on the eighth of this month, Zareer was appointed to the cabinet position on the very same day. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu subsequently forwarded the nomination to the Parliament to seek its endorsement, and the matter was sent to the Government Oversight Committee on June 15 for further review.
During its meeting held on June 22 to evaluate the nomination, the committee noted that background clearances and relevant information were gathered from the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA), the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the Maldives Correctional Service, and the President's Office. Based on these findings, the committee confirmed that Zareer fulfills all the constitutional criteria required to hold a cabinet post and is not engaged in any activities prohibited for a minister under the Constitution.
With these verifications complete, the committee approved Zareer's nomination and forwarded its official report to the parliament floor during today's sitting for a final decision. When the endorsement was put to a vote today, Parliament passed the motion unanimously with 49 votes in favor out of the 50 members present at the session.
Prior to his ministerial appointment, Zareer served as the Commissioner General of Taxation, a post he resigned from to join the cabinet. In addition to his role as Finance Minister, Zareer has also been appointed by the President to serve as the President of the Local Government Authority (LGA).
