People's National Congress (PNC) MP for Hithadhoo Central, Ahmed Azaan Marzooq, has accused the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of enabling corruption in state-owned enterprises.

Speaking during Tuesday's parliamentary sitting on the special audit report of the Fenaka Corporation, Azaan alleged that MDP members had opposed a proposal in the previous Parliament to conduct a special audit of the company. He also claimed that Fenaka's debt had risen to MVR 4 billion by the time the current administration took office.

Azaan further alleged that numerous appointments and promotions were made during the transition period and that equipment had been procured at inflated prices.

Citing findings related to Fenaka's operations, he claimed that MVR 15 million had been spent to lease three excavators, four pickup trucks and a bowser, despite the equipment having an estimated market value of around MVR 4 million.

He said the Parliament's Public Accounts Committee had decided to refer the alleged misconduct to the police for further investigation and recommended strengthening Fenaka's management and oversight to prevent similar incidents in the future.
