The government has decided not to provide full Aasandha coverage to individuals receiving an income above MVR 60,000.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office today, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated that the government is actively working to reduce public expenditure and downsize the state workforce.

The President noted that as part of cost-cutting measures, public services will be restructured to focus directly on those who need them most. He highlighted that under the current system, full Aasandha coverage is provided equally to both the wealthiest and most vulnerable citizens, a practice that international bodies, technical experts, and the government agree is not sustainable.

"Moving forward, individuals with salaries above MVR 60,000 will no longer receive full Aasandha coverage as they do now. High earners above the MVR 60,000 threshold will access Aasandha through a co-pay or pre-pay system," the President stated.

The President explained that this shift—targeting high-income individuals who pay income tax—will save an estimated MVR 285 million annually by 2027, freeing up funds for other public needs. He confirmed that the changes will begin next month, yielding initial savings this year, with further details to be provided by the Finance Minister and relevant officials in the coming days.
