As heavy rains continue across the Maldives, the Addu City Council has urged the public to refrain from using the Addu Link Road except for essential purposes, following severe flooding that has rendered the road's condition hazardous.

While southern atolls have sustained substantial damage from the current nationwide downpours, Addu City has been hit the hardest. The heavy rains have caused widespread street flooding, water intrusion into homes, and major disruptions to daily life.

In an announcement issued this morning, the Addu City Council stated that because the condition of the Link Road has deteriorated to a dangerous level due to the weather, the public is requested—for their own safety and security—not to use the road for non-essential travel.

Additionally, the council has urged motorists to exercise caution when driving on the potholed road and other streets across the city, and to reduce speed in flooded areas.

As de-watering operations proceed swiftly across Addu City with the assistance of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), the City Council has also advised the public to remain vigilant regarding drainage pipes deployed across roads for pumping out floodwaters.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the ongoing adverse weather has caused severe damage by flooding more than 70 houses in Addu Feydhoo.
