The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has stated that many food products sold in the Maldivian market are items whose health benefits have not been scientifically proven.
In a press release issued today, the MFDA noted that laboratory reports are being used when advertising certain locally produced and sold food products in a manner that implies they cure diseases or bring about positive bodily changes. However, the authority emphasized that using laboratory reports or other documentation for such advertising purposes is prohibited under existing regulations.
The MFDA stated that any health-related information included in food products prepared and marketed to claim cures or favorable bodily modifications must be truthful and substantiated by scientific research. Despite this requirement, the authority highlighted that many such products currently available in the local market lack scientifically verified health benefits.
Consequently, the MFDA has strongly urged manufacturers and retailers to refrain from marketing food products in ways that imply they offer healing for illnesses or induce specific physical changes.
