Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) receives a stroke patient every 16 hours, the hospital has reported.

Speaking in a video shared on social media ahead of World Stroke Day, IGMH neurology specialist Dr Salman Nizam said a patient seeks treatment for stroke at the hospital every 16 hours. He did not provide further details.

To raise awareness about stroke and promote screening, IGMH is scheduled to hold a public awareness event today from 4 pm to 6 pm at Artificial Beach.

The hospital said stroke can affect anyone and that recognising its symptoms and seeking immediate medical attention can save lives.

Stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is blocked or a blood vessel ruptures, depriving brain cells of oxygen and nutrients. It can cause permanent disability or be life-threatening.

Common warning signs include sudden facial drooping, weakness or numbness in one arm, difficulty speaking or confusion. Sudden vision changes, severe headaches, dizziness and difficulty walking can also be symptoms.

IGMH advises the public to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear, even if they disappear shortly afterwards. Managing blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol, exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet and avoiding tobacco can help reduce the risk of stroke.
