The National Boating Association of Maldives (NBAM) has called for a thorough and impartial investigation into a recent diving incident involving members of the Maldives Legend Liveaboard and Infinity X diving teams.
In a statement issued yesterday, NBAM said videos of the incident had circulated widely on social media and international platforms, stressing that any proven misconduct or negligence must be addressed under Maldivian law.
The association urged the Maldives Police Service, Ministry of Tourism and other relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive, evidence-based investigation and take legal action against those found responsible. It also called for an end to public accusations and disputes within the boating and diving industry.
NBAM also raised concerns over foreign-operated tourism businesses registered under Maldivian companies, questioning the extent of genuine Maldivian ownership and management in some cases.
The association said Infinity X, previously operated as a foreign vessel, was transferred under a Maldives-registered company following regulatory changes. It called for scrutiny of the company's ownership and management, as well as verification of the vessel's licensing and authorised capacity.
While tourism records list the vessel as having 20 rooms and 40 beds, international booking platforms advertise 19 cabins with a maximum capacity of 30 guests, NBAM noted.
The association called for stronger monitoring and consistent enforcement of regulations to protect local businesses, employment opportunities and visitor safety, while urging responsible reporting to avoid unsubstantiated allegations harming the industry.
