The Bill on Amendment to Tax Administration Act compiled by the state to be sent to the Parliament, has been submitted to the President's Office.

A press statement issued by the Attorney General's Office noted that the purpose of the Bill was to strengthen the workings of Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA). In addition to this, it will ensure that the Commissioner General of Taxation along with the Deputy Commissioner General are held accountable as well as introduce an even more transparent taxation system, easing the difficulties of tax payers.

The AG office revealed that three amendments have been submitted for the Tax Administration Act. These are; including a person responsible for state finances in the Board of MIRA, changing how the Board is compiled along with the operating procedures of the Board in addition to placing a standard term for the Commissioner General and Deputy Commissioner General.

To ease tax payer difficulties, amendments that have been suggested include a deadline to challenge the decisions of MIRA or the Commissioner General. Another revision include the opportunity to go to the tribunal if the tax payer is not satisfied with the amount calculated by MIRA, after having paid at least 30% of said amount.
