Former Governor of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), Ahmed Naseer has said that the perpetrators behind the massive corruption scandal of MMPRC are still in power.

In a statement released after resigning from his post as the Governor, Naseer noted that he came to the position way after the corruption scandal took place. He added that the Governor along with the senior staff of the MMA and the FIU had acted quite irresponsibly during said time period. Naseer highlighted that the internal review report compiled during his tenure along with the relevant investigations clearly outline how the corruption took place.

Naseer also revealed that he had shared the findings of an internal audit report with the Police during March of this year, and further added that a thorough research will lead to evidence which implicates the true perpetrators behind the corruption.

In his statement, Naseer added that MVR 1.3 billion had been stolen from the state by the time he had assumed office. According to him, MMA records show an unusual number of meetings between then Tourism Minister and Senior Staff of MMA. He added that those who were in the leadership of MMA then are still in various positions in MMA and various government institutions.

Naseer asserted that the false allegations over him are a result of him trying to find the truth about the corruption scandal.

Noting the importance of recovering the lost money, Naseer added that it was essential to rebuild the trust that the people have in government institutions. He further noted that there were certain people in the government who do not wish this to happen.

While Naseer has resigned today, he has been accused on a number of charges in connection with the MMPRC Corruption Scandal including influencing the work of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) to stop the corruption of MMPRC.
