Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed that they are currently investigating a case related to "Virgo 9", the tugboat that former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb used to escape to India.

Police confirmed that they were investigating a case related to the tugboat on Tuesday and revealed that they had requested Maldives Customs Service to detain the tugboat when it returned to the country. Police also added that none of the crew members of the boat had been arrested.

Adeeb attempted to escape to India disguised as a crew member of the tugboat and was later caught at the Tuticorin Port last Thursday. He was caught due to one of the crew members of the tugboat.

Police have begun investigating the tugboat at a time when they had revealed that they will take action against those who had helped Adeeb in his attempted escape.

The state has once again requested the Supreme Court to remand Adeeb until the appeal hearings of the case against Adeeb in the Supreme Court concludes. The state had appealed the case where Adeeb had allegedly taken USD 5 million belonging to the state as acquisition fees of Lh. Maabinhuraa to Kuredu Holdings.

In the same case, the Criminal Court had found Adeeb guilty in 2016 and sentenced him to 8 years in jail. When the case was appealed at the High Court by Adeeb, the High Court had ordered the Criminal Court to conduct the trial once again. The state had also requested to remand and withhold Adeeb's passport till the case was over.

Even though the state had requested to remand Adeeb till the end of his trial, Supreme Court did not reach a decision on the matter today.
