Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem has said that Adhuham Mohamed will be prosecuted for the murder of taxi driver Qasim Hassan, based on the evidence collected.
Adhuham had initially confessed to murdering the taxi driver, but retracted his confession during his trial hearing today. Even though he had confessed to the murder during the investigation and the first hearing of his trial, Adhuham plead not guilty today saying that he was drugged while being presented to the court.
Following his confession, the state provided Adhuham a deal in which he was to serve 17 years in prison should the family of the deceased decide against the capital punishment. In a tweet sent out today with regards to said deal, PG Shameem said that it was okay to not go forward with the deal and that based on the evidence collected, they would be able to prove Adhuham guilty of the murder.
Qasim Hassan was murdered on the night of December 4th last year, after which Adhuham was arrested on the night of December 19th.
Adhuham was charged with intentional murder of someone with a sharp object. He had plead guilty to all charges presented by the state during the first hearing of the trial.
However, during the hearing today he said that he did not murder Qasim and that the confession came at a time when he was drugged while being presented to court. He however admitted to attacking Qasim after attempting to mug him.
There was a stark contrast in what Adhuham had said during the first hearing and today's hearing. The hearing today was based on the fact that Adhuham had confessed to the murder during the trial held on February 12th.
Since Adhuham changed his stand, state had requested to move forward with the trial.
