Former Minister for Defence and National Security, Colonel (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim, has said that the Acting Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed, has informed him that the allegations concerning being framed will be investigated.
Colonel (Rtd.) Nazim submitted a case to the Maldives Police Service yesterday, claiming that he had been framed and arrested during the previous administration of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
Speaking on Sangu TV last night, Nazim confirmed that the case has now been submitted. He said that the Acting Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed had met with him and spoken about the case. Colonel Nazim also said that the ACP agreed that the case needs to be investigated and that he had reassured Nazim that he would do so.
A tweet sent by Colonel Nazim stated that his arrest on 18 January 2014 was a crime. He had then called on the Police to work on bringing all those involved to the forefront of justice.
Nazim said that the case has been submitted to the Police in a letter and that he had followed up with a meeting with the ACP. He also said that the case was debriefed in detail to the ACP.
Colonel Nazim said that he hopes that the Maldives Police Service is an institution that upholds the proud name of Police. He also said that he hopes that the institution keeps with the people’s confidence in them.
He also noted that while the incident may have involved a few Police Officers, he does not hold the entire institution responsible for the actions of a few.
Nazim was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2015, following a verdict in court that he had kept dangerous weapons in his home. The sentencing took place after a pistol was allegedly found in his home and he was investigated on the matter. While Colonel (Rtd.) Nazim had submitted the case to the Supreme Court, the court overturned the verdict last month.
